Master Murphy also began competing in Breaking and has won competitions on the state, regional, national and world levels, including 3 consecutive Heavyweight World Champion Belts in Power Breaking (see picture.) Master Murphy has been seen competing on ESPN2, as well as being spotlighted in a Discovery Channel Documentary called “Xtreme Martial Arts”, an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, and a leading role in the motion picture “The Agent.”
In 2008, Master Murphy, along with his wife, Kelly, opened his own school teaching in the Brookfield area in various health clubs. In April of 2011, they opened a brand new studio on Federal Road next to the Dive Shop Aquatic Facility under the name of Academy of Fighting Arts. Today, at Modern Self Defense and Training Center, Master Murphy is a 5th Degree Black belt and teaches classes for both adults and children as well as continuing to compete around the country along with his two children, Samantha and CJ.
At Modern Self Defense, we teach the American Filipino Kun Tao System.
Kun Tao is a practical modern day Martial Art with roots reaching back to the Phillipines. We teach effective and practical techniques for real-life safety and self defense to adults and children of all ages and fitness levels. In addition, we promote the tenets of all martial arts including respect, honesty, perseverance, integrity, and self-control as well as the importance of a positive and courageous attitude inside and out of the training studio.
About the Instructor: Master Clinton Murphy
Master Murphy is a Brookfield, CT native, graduating from BHS in 1989. After high school, Master Murphy found himself looking for something to take the place of the fulfillment he found playing high school football and discovered the Martial Arts. He began studying Filipino Kun Tao with the LaBonte family in Brookfield. He continued studying under Master Ralph Bergamo for the next 17+ years to achieve the level of 5th degree Black Belt.
